Suddenly, consciousness sinks its icy grip into you and yanks you into the realm of wakefulness.

Disoriented, you rise to your feet. Put one in front of the other. Who were you with last night? Are they all with you? Do they still take breath? You can’t tell. Not yet, at least. Instead, you stumble into the next area, and perhaps you’re not alone, but there is one thing that you are innately aware of: something is wrong. So very, very wrong.

The sky has a faint discoloration to it, and if you peer too closely, you might notice how the air seems to be thrumming, pulsing with magic. You can almost taste it—and if you aren’t careful, may choke on it. It’s best to focus on the task at hand in front of you first.

Welcome, Sacrifices, to your weekly investigation!

We will be posting top-levels for searchable locations—one set at 6PM EST and another set at 7PM EST. Each location will contain evidence to find, though it's up to your efforts as to whether you find all of it. Please coordinate investigation groups on Discord, as we ask that group threads consist of no more than 2-3 characters. We will stop tagging each top-level two hours after it went up, i.e. at 8PM and 9PM EST, respectively. Don't worry if you don't find everything! Characters will get the chance to revisit locations tomorrow at trial.

At 9PM EST, an announcement will go up, confirming the victim(s). If you have any questions at any time, please let the mods know by pinging us on Discord!

After two hours, characters will find that their surroundings warp and ripple as a veil of magic closes in over each location, restoring it to normalcy. But the village itself is not normal; the crows squawk, the pyre flares and holds an eerie blue, and the church bell tolls. The stars shudder and fall from the sky until none are left, the moon snuffed out last. The monster presence in your mind goes between quiet and restless.

Happy Friday Dieday! A few things:

The crows can be heard, but not reached. Overseers are not available on Friday. The posters cannot be removed, vandals only receive more paper cuts. All investigation locations are cloaked in a veil of swirling magic; while this veil can be passed through painlessly, characters will find that locations look completely restored to normal after doing so, and will not be able to further investigate. That includes looking for bodies!

Characters will need to be responsible for holding onto evidence until trial, though they will not be able to tamper with it. Please use the sub toplevel to turn in evidence, unless your character ICly would withhold evidence, in which case you do not have to. See you all at trial!

[ it's sad, really. caelus truly wanted to stay up the entire night in order to maintain the barn's safety and instead, what happened? he passed out. and now it's extra spooky the following day.

he stands, using the barn's front doors to help maintain balance. they appear to unlocked now, but that's not as comforting as he'd have liked.

[ Pickles shows up to refectory for some food, but he just stays there for a second, not going towards where the food is given. There are Bad Vibes. He doesn't growl, but he seems very, very wary.

Is there anything off Pickles can pick up with his dog nose? ]

...Caelus, Nina. Morning.

[ Karma comes trotting up, rubbing sleep out of his eyes. he's fourteen, he zzzz'd without knowing everybody forcibly passed out ]

Did you two stay here last night? Anything look different?

[ marina probably shows up not long after, making her way kind of half-asleep towards the refectory but giving pause when she kind of sees pickles giving off a wary stance. ]

Everything okay?

[ is there anything immediately wrong with the threshold or anything? anything on the ground leading inside...? any sounds...? ]

[ she doesn't even remember falling asleep... just everything that happened before that. ]

[ easy enough to already taking a look around, since she slept here. ]

[ i really like these two book nerds and a dog. what a combo! but yeah, sure, same, the whole place is giving off terrible freaky vibes and that's a good enough reason to poke around. ]

Everything tastes like magic.

[ which is unsettling when it's this place. if the others are looking at the outside, he'll go ahead and head inside to the main dining room. anything immediately off? ]

[ guess what, the barn is on fire!

no, luckily for the three of them, it's not. caelus is correct in that the doors are unlocked, and they can look around.

the immediate thing they'll notice is that it's messy. lots of upturned hay. hope nobody has allergies. ]

[ Hehehehoohoo.

Well, as Pickles sniffs he will get a smell of... wine? It smells like wine outside, for some reason.

Since Marina is looking at the ground outside and the threshold, she can see what looks like some type of markings heading outward towards another area of the village. Even more, she will also notice that there are some type of stains there!

Oh also the door is like kind of hanging off its hinges. Gale walks past this and goes inside and he can see that the same markings from outside are in here as well. Wow. ]

Something's wrong.

[ the hairs on the back of his neck, beneath his almost mullet, they're standing on end.

he walks across the main length of the barn, stopping to check the horse stalls (he's been staying in one). ]

[ Wine... He whines a little in response.

Pickles snorts in the air and trots down to the basement winery if he can. If it's available, does he smell more wine? Strongly? Like they're out of their containers?? ]

[ Karma peeks inside the mailbox first before following after the two of them. He doesn't live here so he doesn't know what's changed, layout wise, but he remembers straw everywhere and cute(?) little(?) rats running around. Can he see/hear any rats? Smell anything unusual? ]

[ she gets a little shiver and hugs herself. ]

[ since caelus is checking the stalls and karma is getting a lay of the barn, she'll climb up and check the loft. ]

... Okay... alright. Well. Nothing like ominous destruction first thing.

can marina see what direction the marks are headed in or if that's still a ~*~mystery~*~ if she tries to kind of gauge what direction they're headed? are they like gouge marks or print marks at a first look?

as for the stains, she'll get a closer peep at those with more interest. where are the stains - on the ground or around the threshold and do they smell at all? like blood or like wine...? ]

[ caelus can go check the two horse stalls, which are just as devoid of horses as usual. since he's been sleeping in them, he can probably notice they're about as clean as he remembers them being.

karma checks the mailbox and it is... empty! as for the inside of the barn--actually, the cute little rats are not out and about. he can see some huddling in the corner and looking quite stressed. also, is he just sniffing the air?

nina can climb up to the loft with no difficulty or obstruction. what is she looking at? ]

[ but he'll investigate this door first - what kind of marks are they? weapon or claw or just. marks. and how does it look like the door was broken? With force or something else.

Do the marks seem to originate from inside the building and anywhere in particular in there? ]

Nothing in the stalls.

[ even raising his voice to call that out leaves him feeling deeply unsettled.

caelus shifts his attention to karma who's sniffing but within eyesight. ]

Hey, Nina. Be careful up there, but tell me what you see.

[ he starts poking with his bat through the upturned hay and mess on the main barn floor. looking for anything left behind?? tracks???? blood??? a passionate note of intended revenge? ]

[ I must first note that when Pickles goes to the cellar, he is walking past the cellar door that is ALSO off its hinges, although this door is lying on the floor instead of just halfway off. As he goes down, the smell of wine gets much stronger... yes... like perhaps it is out of its containers... someone partied...

They seem to be heading out towards the....... abandoned theatre. Whoa! The marks when she gets a better look at them look like prints!

These stains are around the ground, but there is a higher concentration of it near the threshold. They smell both like blood and wine. Gross?

For Gale, it looks like what Marina is seeing. Prints! Although the ones that are further away that Marina was looking at are much fainter than the ones that Gale is. As for the door, it looks like something with great force broke it, but it'll be difficult to gauge what. They do seem to have started from inside and are heading outward. ]

[ me like what else besides air can karma sniff... UHH... ig if he can discern any strange scents from the ground/walls/hay/Caelus/etc??

doing this while he inches towards the rats, trying to see if he can tell what's got them spooked, what the area looks immediately around them that they haven't gone off and hidden at the first sign of danger. ]

Can't believe you two have been living like this...

[ it's a mess!! does the mess look haphazard, concentrated in specific areas like somebody was looking for something, and/or in a trail like a fight's happened here? ]
